It should be noted when planning to visit China that there are tips which may be wise for you, there are also tips that have to be obeyed to the letter, this also applies to some of the rules and regulations once you have arrived.
Bear in mind that for example the Chinese people in the main are quite reserved and quiet. If you require information you will, l probably have to ask the questions first, probably asking for all the important points as well. When you first meet there may be a joyful small round of applause from the person you meet following your shake of hands, this is normal and to be expected. Another thing that may be strange to you as a visitor is the inquisitiveness of the people, you may find yourself being followed in the streets by locals, this is simply them checking you out, mainly as you are different to them.
To enter the country in the first place there are strict rules and regulations which must be followed. Your passport must have at least six months left on it and must be accompanied by a visa sorted out before travel. Once you arrive if you don’t plan to stay in a hotel you must inform local authorities as soon as you arrive, hotels do this for you. If you are planning a stay of over six months for education, work or private reasons you must supply a detailed health certificate, this must state among other things that you don’t have the HIV virus.
If you plan to travel from China to Hong Kong and back it’s likely you will need fresh visas for each trip in to China. If you stop over at a Chinese airport you don’t need a visa as long as you don’t leave the airport. Also important to know is that single parents or single adults traveling with children may need officially recognized documents to prove the children are in their legal care. It is also recommended that before traveling you take out high quality insurance and health cover, the country isn’t intrinsically dangerous nut there have been recent terrorist attacks and there are some cases of disease outbreaks in recent months.
Once in the country it is worth thinking of your own safety when moving round china, although in the main the country is no more dangerous then many other around the world. There are muggings and pick pocketing cases but no more then some areas, the major cities are generally safe and the out lying area are slightly less safe. If you go in to the hills and mountains or near the borders the security situation deteriorates some what and therefore should be avoided or at least extreme care should be taken.
Its also worth bearing in mind that the country is very restrictive when it comes to its politics and its personal freedom. Don’t say anything detrimental to the government and don’t get involved in any demonstrations, no matter the size. Don’t be put off going to China but bear in mind a few of these facts before going.
