History of China

Culture Treasure Chest of Asia

One thing that China can offer to every sightseer is plenty of sights and sounds to visit. There is a great history to the country and there is a great sense of pride among the people about this history. As the people are so proud they make sure that historical attractions are well maintained and are accessible. With over five thousand years of history that country is often called the cultural treasure chest of Asia, it’s a big boast and worth checking if true. The old fashioned history blends with the modern aspects of China.

The most well known historical location in China is probably the best known in the continent as a whole, namely the Great Wall. It was built, maintained and when necessary re-built between the sixth and sixteenth century.

Built to repel the attacks of the Xiongnu forces on the northern lands of china. Although certain parts are no longer visible or accessible many parts of the four thousand mile wall still stands. Bear in mind that many parts of the wall have become unstable through erosion and disrepair, also some bits have simply been demolished to make way for progress. The wall is also linked to one of the great urban myths, the one that says its the only man made object visible from the moon, sorry that’s not true but it makes a good story.

China is one of the oldest organized civilizations on earth, its states and its cultures stretch back many thousands of years. Inventions such as paper and printing also began here and so they are historical aspects worth looking up. There are other famous attractions such as the Terracotta Warriors to visit, although incredibly impressive they are also an indication of the age of the area as they are dated around 214 BC.

One of the most important parts of Chinese life is the religion, this gives fantastic places of worship and burial to visit. Religions such as Taoism and Buddhism have been followed among others and all have left behind their places of history. There is also a tradition for following some religious practices at home, some trying to outdo others and so may be worth seeing if possible.

Although China holds a great regard in the world for its early inventions it has in recent centuries begun to trail behind, this is why modern China is trying so hard to catch up. Saying that they are believed responsible for the invention of gunpowder, matches, toilet paper, suspension bridges, propellers, rockets and blast furnaces among many, many other items. Therefore China can be allowed to fall behind and to give others a chance.

There are many aspects of history and culture to explore in this diverse but very interesting country. Modern China isn’t always portrayed in a great light by the media but is still a very good place for sightseeing and exploring. Although the weather is subject to change as in many countries this isn’t a reason to put you off, especially if you aren’t planning a beach holiday, stick to the history and culture.
